The Cheshire Cat Revisited

چکیده

The concept of effective field theory leads in a natural way to a construction principle for phenomenological sensible models known under the name of the Cheshire Cat Principle. We review its formulation in the chiral bag scenario and discuss its realization for the flavor singlet axial charge. Quantum effects inside the chiral bag induce a color anomaly which requires a compensating surface term to prevent breakdown of color gauge invariance. The presence of this surface term allows one to derive in a gauge-invariant way a chiralbag version of the Shore-Veneziano two-component formula for the flavor-singlet axial charge of the proton. We show that one can obtain a striking Cheshire-Cat phenomenon with a negligibly small singlet axial charge.

Quantum effects inside the chiral bag induce a color anomaly which requires a compensating surface term to prevent breakdown of color gauge invariance. We show that the presence of this surface term first discovered several years ago allows one to derive in a gauge-invariant way a chiral-bag version of the Shore-Veneziano two-component formula for the flavor-singlet axial charge of the proton. ...

Observation of a classical Cheshire cat in an optical interferometer.

A recent neutron interferometry experiment claims to demonstrate a paradoxical phenomenon dubbed the "quantum Cheshire cat" [Nat. Commun.5, 4492 (2014)]. We have reproduced and extended these results with an equivalent optical interferometer. The results suggest that the photon travels through one arm of the interferometer, while its polarization travels through the other. However, we show that...

The Cheshire cat principle states that hadronic observables at low energy do not distinguish between hard (quark) or soft (meson) constituents. As a result, the delineation between hard/soft (bag radius) is like the Cheshire cat smile in Alice in wonderland. This principle reemerges from current holographic descriptions of chiral baryons whereby the smile appears in the holographic direction. W...

The Proton Spin in the Chiral Bag Model: Casimir Contributions and Cheshire Cat Principle

The flavor singlet axial charge has been a source of study in the last years due to its relation to the so called Proton Spin Problem. The relevant flavor singlet axial current is anomalous, i.e., its divergence contains a piece which is the celebrated UA(1) anomaly. This anomaly is intimately associated with the η′ meson, which gets its mass from it. When the gauge degrees of freedom of QCD ar...

Observation of a quantum Cheshire Cat in a matter-wave interferometer experiment

From its very beginning, quantum theory has been revealing extraordinary and counter-intuitive phenomena, such as wave-particle duality, Schrödinger cats and quantum non-locality. Another paradoxical phenomenon found within the framework of quantum mechanics is the 'quantum Cheshire Cat': if a quantum system is subject to a certain pre- and postselection, it can behave as if a particle and its ...
